The Reading Workshop

Creating Spaces for Instruction, Dialogue & Interpretation

Welcome to the Reading Workshop NING!

Fellow Educators,
I have created this NING to provide elementary and middle school teachers with a forum for discussing issues in literacy education.

Please feel free to invite like-minded educators to join us. Each member is invited to contribute to the posted discussions and other various entries or to start discussions of their own.

The goal of this network is to support one another in our efforts to create effective instructional practices and spaces for for readers to interrogate, analyze and interpret texts and visual images. This is an interactive site, so interact!

It is interesting that we talk with students in ways that we would not talk with anyone else outside of school. We ask literal questions that we would not ask anyone else. It becomes a way of "playing reading." Each classroom creates a set of prac...

"The biggest challenge I see, is for teachers to re-establish reading aloud and discussion as the foundation of the reading workshop. Reading aloud is often seen as a thing to waste time, to calm children down, or just for fun, rather than the imp...

You should follow up with a writing assignment or a journal entry where the student shares thoughts about the class discussion, their understandings and new opinions of the poem that developed as a result of the conversation.
